How to Operate a Segway
"9 Steps With Pictures"
Step 1:
Look on the display of the Segway infokey and look for the eight bar scale that indicates how much charge a battery has. This is a critical component one asking how to operate a Segway.
Also to identify how much charge the two lithium ion batteries have, plug the machine in and look to see if there are two solid lights and the bass or to blinking lights on the base. Two blinking lights indicate that both of the batteries are fully charged. To solid lights indicate that both of the batteries are still charging. Note: you may see one solid light in one blinking light, this means that one battery is fully charged and one is still charging.

Step 2:
Unplug your Segway and prepare to turn it on. When preparing to turn on your Segway make sure that you are in a place that is free of obstructions and potential hazards. This is also critical one asking how to operate a Segway.
Step 3:
Take your Segway infokey and press the power button to turn it on. It is important that the watch battery inside the infokey has enough power to transmit it's signal via Bluetooth to the radio board that is inside of the base of the Segway.
If you press the power button and you do not get a reaction from the Segway, this could indicate 2 things: there’s not enough charge in the battery inside your key, or you may need a new antenna or a new radio board.
To operate a Segway, you must power on the machine.

Step: 4
Once you have powered on the Segway, you must engage balance mode. It is critical to understand the difference between balance mode and standby mode when operating the Segway.
When The Segway is in balance mode it is ready to operate. When the Segway is not in balance mode, it is in stand by mode and is not ready to operate.
The proper procedure to engage balance mode is to tip the Segway until the foot panels are parallel to the ground and the lights on the base of the Segway are green. Press one of the footpads and this will engage balance mode. You will know that balance mode is engaged because the green lights on the base of the machine will become pulsing green lights. It will also know that the Segway is in balance mode and ready to operate when it attempts to move forward when you’re not on it.
This step is extremely valuable information when evaluating how to operate a Segway.
When a operator is not on the Segway and the Segway is in balance mode, since all of the weight is on the front of the machine it will attempt to move forward slightly when the operator is not on it; this is why you must park the machine up against a curb or a tree or a building or something that is sturdy enough to stop the machine from attempting to move forward.
When a Segway is not in balance mode and is in standby mode, you can push the Segway around in the same posture that you would a push lawnmower; and there will be no resistance besides gravity and the weight of the machine.
OK, you tapped the foot panel and now the Segway is in balance mode and ready to operate!

Step 5:
Place two hands on the Segway and then step up swiftly and confidently placing both feet on the center of the footpads.
Note: often times first time Segway operators wiggle forwards and backwards slightly because the Segway has a little bit of play. Meaning, the foot panels kind of feel similar to the way that a diving board feel when you first stand it in; it has give/play. Once you step onto the Segway and acquaint yourself with how it feels to stand on the Segway you will no longer wiggle forwards and backwards.
This is critical to understand when asking how to operate a Segway.

Step 6:
Once the Segway operator is standing on the Segway and steady; to go forward the operator must lean forward. To break the operator must slightly leaning backwards. Once the rider has successfully made the Segway break, if the Segway operator continues to lean backwards the machine will go into reverse. It is not recommended to intentionally drive backwards long distances because it is not safe. If the Segway operator drives the Segway backwards too far and too fast the Segway will send a warning sound notifying the operator to stop doing that.
Step 8:
Wants the Segway operator understands how to make the Segway go forwards and backwards, it is now time to learn how to make a Segway turn.
Simply make your arms go side to side while holding the handle bar with two hands.
How learning How to ride a Segway, One common mistake the first time Segway operators make is they attempt to turn the Segway like a bicycle. The Segway handlebars do not turn the way the handlebars on a bicycle do. The Segway turns by making your arms go side to side like two arms on a clock.
Think of it like this, at the center of the clock there is a base that the two arms extend from and simply go left or right anchored at the base. As a metaphor, the first time Segway operator can can consider the base of their body to be similar to the base where the arms on the clock are anchored and as the Segway operator extends their arms to the handlebar and makes them go left and right they operate in the same way that arms and o’clock operate.
Which is not how a bicycle turns. Understanding how to turn a Segway properly and efficiently as critical when evaluating how to operate a Segway.

Step 8:
Identifying terrain that is appropriate to ride on and that is inappropriate to ride on is critical for safety purposes. Please see the Segway Safety Manual for a corporate approved and detailed description of proper terrain.
But in a nutshell, do not operate the Segway over slippery terrain that could cause the Segway to slip, bumpy terrain that could cause a Segway to trip, and vertical to rain like sidewalk curbs and stairs as this could cost to Segway to tip forward making a operator fall off.
If you do not understand what terrain is appropriate to operate the Segway then you do not know how to operate the Segway safely.

Step 9:
Dismounting the Segway is just as important as mounting the Segway. When the operator is ready to dismount the Segway the operator must drive the Segway to a place where there are no obstructions and obstacles that could cause their wheels to hit anything.
Once the Segway operator has located a proper dismount location the operator must step off the Segway one foot at a time quickly while keeping both hands on the Segway handlebars. Please keep in mind, this is important when learning How the Segway Works; while the Segway is in balance mode it wants to go forwards even if you’re not on it because all of the weight is on the front of the Segway. So when the Segway operator steps off the Segway they must maintain control of the Segway by holding the handlebars and slowly walking the Segway up to a place to where they can leave the Segway up against the wall, a curb, or any sturdy surface.
Once the Segway operator has successfully dismounted and parked the Segway, it is now time to power off the machine. Simply follow Step 1 to power the machine off and then place the Segway in the proper charging place and plug it in. Be sure to keep the Segway plugged in at all times when no operating it to maintain the longevity of the lithium ion batteries.
