Segway Jitters
Sometimes people get what we call the "Segway jitters" when they are first watching a safety video or getting ready to do one on one training with a Segway trainer. This is usually because they’ve never ridden a Segway before so they don’t know whether it’s easy to ride. But as soon as a first time Segway rider gets on a Segway they find out that it is actually very easy to ride. The learning curve is not as steep as you would think.
3 Stages to the Segway Learning Curve
When asking yourself is a Segway easy to ride, consider this. There are three stages to the Segway learning curve.
The first stage the Segway rider is nervous and is thinking to themselves possibly, what did I get myself into? I’m kind of nervous! Not all people are nervous before they ride but some are.
The second stage of the Segway learning curve the first time rider thinks, "wow this is really easy I wonder if I can buy this machine for less than $6000?" Then they start thinking about maybe buying a used Segway and wondering what the pricing of it is. Also during the second stage of the Segway learning curve, the rider starts to develop their own riding style. They learn that if they bend their knees their legs kind of act like shock absorbers. If they relax their arms while holding the handle bar it’ll be less constricting. Also they realize that a Segway is easy to ride!
The third stage of the Segway learning curve, the first time rider sometimes thinks “ I wonder what this baby can do? “. This is a natural part of the human condition once we start getting good at something, we usually want to test it out and see how far we can push the limits. This is where a person can get into trouble when riding any type of machine. If you start thinking that you want to test it out and start doing tricks, that is a good indication that you should reel it in a little and make sure that you are making safe decisions on your Segway.

15 to 30 Minutes Worth of Training
A typical training session for a first time Segway rider is 15 to 30 minutes. Some first time riders get the hang of it really quickly within the first 5 or 10 minutes and have no problem riding for hours. Some first time Segway riders need a little more time when they first get on the machine. Our opinion is that it’s all mental. The more relaxed a person is the quicker they realize that a Segway is easy to ride. If a person steps on the Segway and they are super nervous this can affect how intuitive the machine feels and how fluid the ride is. If the Segway rider has a really stiff body because of nerves this can trick them into thinking that the machine is difficult to ride, when in actuality the rider is unintentionally making it difficult to ride. Segways are very popular among returning veterans as well for these reasons.
Riding a Segway is as easy as riding a bike, actually... it’s easier than riding a bike.
Just lean forward to make the Segway go forward. Just lean backwards to make the Segway break, and if you continue to lean backwards the Segway will go into reverse. After you spend 5 to 10 minutes on a Segway, you’re cruising around enjoying yourself. It’s almost like using a JetSki on the sidewalk, it’s lots of fun and it’s on everyone’s bucket list. Once you give it a try, you'll see how easy it is to Segway and before you know it, you'll be playing Segway polo!
