Bob Parks Horse Fountain

In 1989 Bob Parks, artist and gallery owner, donated a magnificent fountain with the intent to attract visitors to the 5th Avenue shops and galleries. The statue itself was of five champion Arabian horses rearing from out of the fountain. Tom Chauncey’s award-winning Arabians were the horses that served as the model for this statue. The statue also represents Scottsdale’s status as being central to Arabian horse breeding in America.

Being one of the most photographed landmarks in Scottsdale, the statue exhibits both grace and power which are also the key attributes to Arabian horses. People flock to this statue for it is a wondrous sight not just to photograph, but also to take in. It stands right outside 5th avenue welcoming the visitors with this display of sheer elegance that it ends up drawing them in. Children as especially awed by the five horses and they circle around them which much glee and fascination. Adults also seem to share this sentiment as horses hold a soft spot with the people of Scottsdale, the city that prides itself in calling it The West’s Most Western Town.

The Horse and the Wild West

Horses have always been prized in the wild west. The natives shared an incredibly strong both with their horses and so did the Cowboys. Horses helped shape the wild west as they were more than just means of transport because they served as intelligent companions too. Whether it was about sprinting short distances, delivering mail or running races, horses were always a sight to behold and they inspired something in people. There was something very wild and powerful about horses but also a whole sense of grace to them that added a new dimension to owning a horse. Horse breeding kicked up and people from far and wide started taking note of horses in the west. It is a fact that cowboys are an important part of American culture, often depicted as rugged individuals in stunning landscapes accompanied by a horse. Even if it was just tending to live on the range, horse ranching grew abundantly and thrived and horses had made their worth known.

Western Heritage and Values

Scottsdale, still holding true to its western heritage and values, being home to the Arabian Horse Association of Arizona, maintains it’s fascination and interest with horses and it is exhibited by its citizens too. A first-time tourist might find the sight of the statue very graceful and fascinating but they’d be surprised to see the same sentiment held by the townies too. The sheer beauty of a horse is something widely shared and adored by the people of Scottsdale and it just doesn’t have anything to do with the city’s very western disposition, it is because horses have inspired a sense of awe in people for a very long time and this site still continues to do so. While still not being the only horse sculpture in Scottsdale, you’ll find the four life-sized bronze horses thundering away from the fountain to captivate you and instill a longing for adventure within.
